About me
Tony Charles is a professor at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, where he is Director of the university’s School of the Environment and teaches in the Environmental Science Department and the Sobey School of Business. His research is interdisciplinary, focusing on the environment and natural resources, and managing for greater sustainability and human well-being. He especially emphasizes applications to oceans, coasts and fisheries, as well as climate change.
Tony’s work has appeared in over one hundred publications, including several books, the most recent being “Sustainable Fishery Systems”. Other books include “Governance of Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation” and “Governing the Coastal Commons” as well as “Addressing the Climate Change and Poverty Nexus”.
Tony is the Director of two international initiatives, the Community Conservation Research Network, and the Small-Scale Fisheries Stewardship Project, which highlights how fisheries are conserving ecosystems globally. He is the recipient of a Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation and a Gulf of Maine Visionary Award, and has served as an advisor to many environmental, Indigenous and community organizations.
